Why Shaun T’s “Trust & Believe” Podcast Spoke to Me

For those of you who don’t know, before Alisha and I started NC Fit Club, I was in radio (and still do freelance work) as a producer. I’m the guy who produces commercials, radio station imaging, etc so when Shaun asked me if I wanted to produce his podcast, I was honored. It was a win/win for both of us, he’s my friend who’s great at motivating, I love producing (not as much as I love coaching) so it was a perfect fit.

Shaun just re-branded his podcast from “Define Your Life” to “Trust and Believe” and as I was producing the first episode I was really moved by his topic. It made me start thinking of friends in my life and people who we work with as he explained what he means by “Trust and Believe”. The short answer, because I want you to go listen to it, is this: You have to trust in yourself through consistency and time to build the belief that you need to know “I can do this!”

That’s the part of coaching people that kills me. Do you know how many people come up to Shaun and say “OMG, I tried your workout and after a week I was like, I can’t do this!”. Shaun of course challenges them in that belief, but it was a conversation that he talks about in this particular podcast where he had an “a-ha” moment with this girl he was playing tennis with that also shined some light on this issue for me.  I now realize that people need to Trust and Believe in themselves and really work on the mental aspect of that in order to succeed and make it a lifestyle change. My skin crawls when my friend Jason says, “I’m starting my diet tomorrow.”, do you know how many times I’ve heard him say that? As his friend I want to shake him, because he has to want it, he as to see it for what it is. It’s NOT a diet, diets are temporary. It’s a LIFESTYLE change in which the word diet goes from something short term, to something that describes your daily eating habits in the sense of your lifestyle, meaning long-term.

So now I have a podcast to send to my friend and to you, if you fall into this category. Coach Summit 2015 Recap & What is Coaching?

We just got back from our annual Beachbody Summit and had a BLAST!

This was the first year that I worked out on stage with Shaun in front of some of our peers and man, what an exhilarating feeling! Nashville was amazing, and we can’t wait to go back next year and see where we are with NC Fit Club and whose lives have changed.

The one thing I think I love the most about Summit is that we get to re-unite with our Fitness Family, our coaches who are on our team from all over the country, many of which we ONLY get to see that one or two times a year. We get to talk to them through video calls and Facebook, but it’s not the same as when you’re face to face and get to have “real” conversations with them. We love getting the opportunity to meet meet some of the people that they’ve brought to Summit and whose lives they have changed through weight-loss and financial goals.

Meet Courtney

One of our newest coaches to join our team, Courtney who is a mother of two and has worked with Alisha for years in dentistry. She would come to our Fit Clubs and was always in decent shape but fell in love with Shaun’s programs (and Shaun himself), hit INSANTIY: MAX:30 full force and got in SICK SHAPE! (I’m talking so amazing, some of her girlfriends got a little jealous.) So what did she do? She became a coach and started her own MAX:30 group.  

I met one of the guys who she coached at a BBQ we hosted and he was so grateful for her holding him accountable for his goals. That is what I love the most: perfect strangers bonding and growing as a like-minded group and changing their lives

Meet Ryan

Then there is Ryan who we met through a shared love of riding Can-Am Spyders (3-wheel motorcycles). He started off with us as a customer and had a lot of weight to lose (you’ve probably seen him on our YouTube channel) and is now a coach.

To date he’s down 90lbs, and isn’t stopping! He was there with us in Nashville and I have to say he’s been such a welcome addition to our social circle and watching him coach other “bigger” guys to have the courage to join him on his journey to a healthy living.

So why am I telling you about these awesome people and how much I loved Summit?

Because it represents what we live for. Alisha and I thrive off of relationships not only with our customers, but with our coaches. We try really hard to surround ourselves with people who care about other people and who feed off of the positive energy we have.

You know the saying, birds of a feather….well that sums up the last 7 years of our lives and will continue to mold and guide us for the next 20+ years as we continue to grow.

Our Top 5 Favorite “Fitness” Things

#2 – Cellucor C4 Extreme Workout Supplement

Now I know there are a lot of pre-workout formulas, these are just “our” favorites. C4 right now, is Todd’s (mine) favorite pre-workout formula. It gives you the tingle, the flavors are amazing and it definitely pushes you through your workout.

#2XU Compression Shorts & Tights (Men & Women)

Love, love, love these! If you workout a lot, you probably wear some type of compression shorts, or you should! I’ve bought so many pairs at the workout chain stores and after a while they begin to develop the “funk”, fade and just don’t seem to hold up well at all. Well that’s before I found these beauties. It’s another gem that Shaun turned me onto, first off they last forever, he has several pairs that he’s had for years! The screen-printing on them seems to hold up better which keeps them looking like they did the day you bought them, and they don’t develop the funk!

But you want to know what I love about them the most? The way the fit. A lot of compression shorts fit me weird, it’s hard to find the pair that doesn’t push your skin up and make you look like you have a “muffin-top” and then there’s some that are too big or after a while break down and become too loose. These have hardly any waistband on them at all so it dramatically cuts down the “muffin-top” push which let’s face it, makes you feel better about yourself when you look in the mirror. If you look in the mirror and you feel like you look fat before you workout, you’re mental state going in is going to suck. These fit you the way all shorts should.

These are the only compression shorts I feel comfortable enough in, to workout in just them…with no shorts over the top of them. They are pricey, but when you consider you don’t have to buy any more for a LONG time, they pay for themselves in that and in the way they make you feel.

We’ve used a couple of different push-up stands in the past, and we love the Beachbody ones that you can purchase on our SHOP tab, but we also found these little beauties on Amazon and love the versatility and lightweight features of them.

#5 – Vivobarefoot Men’s Stealth Running Shoe

This is a brand new one to our world, but quickly moving up the ranks. I’ve been skeptical of minimalist shoes and the “working out barefoot” approach, but I’m intrigued and am exploring it.

Darren, who you may know from Shaun’s workouts like Insanity, Asylum and more, turned me onto these. They essentially allow you to workout barefoot, but with something on your feet. They cut down on wearing shoes that may mess up your kinetic chain and the way your body absorbs shocks from jumping as well as the way you run. I’ve tried them outside and it was a little weird, but I love them inside in our workout room (granted it has padding and carpet), but when I wear them inside I notice my feet do respond well to them. If you are someone who has pain in your arches and feet hurt when you workout, you should definitely look into these.

Insanity Vs. T25, What’s the Difference Between Them?

Which is Better, Insanity Vs T25?

Now that the word is spreading about Focus T25, people are wondering how it compares and what’s the difference between Insanity and T25.  One thing I can promise you is that they both have the Shaun T intensity that you came to love about Insanity.  They both get amazing results. The one big difference…TIME.

Insanity Results in T25 Time

When it comes to Insanity vs T25, the biggest element to the success we’ve seen in the popularity of T25 is the time factor.  It’s 25 minutes from start to finish.  No matter what phase you’re in, they’re all 25 minutes.  Unlike Insanity where your first 30 days are 39 to 45 minutes, then your second month, it jumps up to an hour…with T25, you’re guaranteed 25 minutes every day.

Now with that 25 minutes, there are no water breaks, no warm up rounds, you just go!  Some people might read that and think “Oh, heck no! I’m out!”, but stay with me on this.

A few things to keep in mind are:

  • 25 minutes go by really fast
  • Tonya (from Insanity) is on every workout as the modifier, more on that below
  • The moves build, so you ease into the intensity

You don’t just start off full throttle on T25. That would be stupid and if there’s one thing Shaun isn’t…it’s stupid.  He may have just designed one of the smartest workout programs in Focus T25 that we’ve ever seen.

Modifications Are a Big Factor in Deciding to Do Insanity or T25

Next to time, this is by far what I’m excited about the most when it comes to the difference between Insanity and T25. Ever since we’ve been doing local Fit Club workouts with Insanity, the biggest challenge was helping people modify.  The lack of modifications is what scared people about Insanity, especially if they had an injury from the past. The #1 scare we heard was, “I’m not in shape enough to do Insanity”.  While that’s completely false, it’s hard to make people realize it. The truth is, everyone can do Insanity.  The problem was, unless you had a coach who you were plugged in with for support and before the Insanity Certification was available, you had no idea how to modify.  When we got certified to teach the live Insanity classes, it was an eye-opening experience for us to learn modifications we never even thought of.  Now that T25 is out, I’m seeing the same modifications we were taught being used in T25.

It’s been a really positive experience to see people at our live workouts trying T25 for the first time and see Tonya modify and know, “Hey, I can do this!”.  Alisha has knee issues and uses the modifications quite often. She will tell you that she gets every bit as good of a workout as I do without the modifications.  This element has leveled the playing field. Now a husband and wife or a newbie and a veteran workout person can workout together to the same DVD and both get the same results….a drenched shirt and an amazing feeling.

Better Calorie Burn, Insanity or T25?

We get this a lot when people are asking us about the difference between Insanity and T25. As a matter of fact, I did a post about the calorie burn with T25 here.  One thing I’ll tell you is that you can get an amazing calorie burn with T25.  In some cases, we’ve seen calorie burns as high as 600-700 calories, especially on the cardio workouts.  When it comes to the ab workouts or the resistance training, the calorie burn will drop, but that’s normal due to the fact that your heart rate isn’t as high.  But on those days you have to remember that you’re building muscle, and muscle burns fat.  So don’t get too hung up on the calorie burn on those days.

The biggest thing with T25 and calorie burn is calorie intake!  Because this isn’t Insanity or the Asylum, you can’t eat 1,800 to 2,000 calories and expect to lose weight.  The beauty of this workout is that it is short on time, not short on intensity, but it’s not going to require the same calorie intake as a 60-minute Insanity workout.  So the recommended calorie intake for T25 is around 1,200 to 1,300, which is far from starving yourself.  That’s actually a very healthy and maintainable calorie intake for anyone.  You combine that intake with the burn you get during the workout, the after burn you get after the workout, and you will see crazy things start to happen.

Proof It Works

One of the ladies in our Challenge Group posted this on week 7 of the program:

I didn’t post my stats from last week. Since the start of T25, I am down a total of 14 lbs (wohooo) -4 in chest, -3 in waist, 1.5 in hips, -1 in thighs, .5 in arms. And my favorite jeans are telling the truth, gotta find some more.

This is a lady that had tried Insanity, Hip Hop Abs, and I think another program….but now has found what works.  Her biggest struggle was sticking with it. The proof is in the post. The biggest difference for her this time was two things: 1) She’s in a challenge group with 24/7 support. 2) It’s 25 minutes a day and allows her to modify while still pushing her as hard as she can go.  I’ll add in one more….it’s fun.  Especially when your jeans are “telling you the truth”.

How Many Calories Do You Burn Doing T25?

I’m getting asked this and “how much the average calorie burn is supposed to be for the T25 workouts?”, A LOT! In a previous post I wrote all about the Focus T25 workout, so I’ll keep this one short and just stick to calories on this one.

1,279 calories burned… When I looked at my T25 calorie burn, I was shocked…  I’m not sure why it did, after all it is a Shaun T workout, and anything he has his hands on, you know is going to be killer. I guess it is because the workout went by so quickly, a 25 minute workout is not long at all.

I’ve been a fan of Shaun T’s workouts for years, starting with Insanity and then moving into The Asylum workouts, never did care much for Hip Hop Abs (but that’s because I’m rhythmically challenged).

It’s no secret that you can burn anywhere from 600-1,000 calories during an Insanity or Asylum workout.  A lot of it has to do with the Max Interval Training and how that works with your body.  So when you figure up your calorie burn for Focus T25, it is very similar, just in a nice little short 25 minute package.  Your T25 calorie burn will definitely depend on your effort level, that’s no secret.

Your T25 Calorie Burn Will Vary

At the time that I wrote this, we are still in the Alpha Phase of Focus T25, so I’m basing this off what we’ve experienced so far.  When I do the cardio workouts, I hit around 600 calories, not counting the after burn that your body goes through for the next several hours afterwards.  When we do the Ab Intervals workout, the calorie burn is lower, due to the fact that there’s not as much cardio as there is in the “Cardio” workout itself or the Speed 1.0, Total Body Circuit, etc.

On Fridays however….it’s what Shaun T calls Double Day.  It’s optional, but it’s where you do 2 workouts back to back.  If you don’t want to double up, you can do the 2nd one on Saturday, but I’d rather have my weekends off, so we get it out of the way.  And yes you can skip that 2nd workout all together, but at that point in the week, you’re on a mission and don’t want anything to stop you from your success….so you usually willpower through it.

On those double days, it’s nothing for me to hit well over 1,000 calories just during the actual workout, not counting the after burn.  If you factor the after burn into the mix, you’re EASILY going to hit 1,500-2,000 calories as your body tries to rebuild and figure out what in the world just happened.

In Summary, The Calorie Burn Rate for Focus T25 Works

I know it sounds too good to be true, but just experience it and you’ll believe.  We did a workout with several ladies at my wife’s office and they were shocked too. Now keep in mind, a lot of them had to do the modifications that you’ll see Tonya do in the workouts, but they were in a flop sweat!  Several of them said they sweated more and felt like they got a better workout in 25 minutes than they do at their Zumba or gym workouts.

Focus T25 Get It Done Nutrition Guide: Know How It Works?

The beauty of the Focus T25 Nutrition Guide is, it’s SMART!  We’ve seen this with all the Beachbody nutrition guides that come with the programs, they’re geared to make whichever workout it’s paired with work for you.  They are set up so you can’t fail, unless you just don’t try.  So let’s examine what’s makes the Focus T25 Nutrition Guide so easy to follow.

Focus T25 Nutrition Guide Basics

The whole goal of the Focus T25 Nutrition Guide is to “get it done!”  This workout program was designed for those of you who don’t have time.

Time is the one commodity that we cannot afford to waste, but we end up wasting the most of.  So if you’re committed to a smart 25 minute a day workout regimen, what sense would it make to not have a nutrition guide that was just as simple and quick? Exactly. Get it done is just that. It’s simple and it’s easy and fast.

Before you read anymore, right now, I want you to…

Stop Counting Calories!

focus t25 nutrition guideWhile the guide gives you 2 options (we’ll get into that in a minute) of what your daily caloric intake is, you don’t need to be stressed about counting every single little calorie you put in your mouth, unless you’re one of those people who thrive on that and you have a check list for every detail of your life… have at it.  But I know I hate counting calories, so I don’t.  What I do, is make sure that the calories I consume are the right kind of calories.

This guide definitely helps out with that.

What’s in the Focus T25 Nutrition Guide?

The table of contents reads like a 1st grade Dr. Seuss book, it’s very simple:

  • Overview / The 4 Step Calorie Quiz (more below on this)
  • Suggested Calories Per Meal
  • Want More Customization?
  • Nutrition Troubleshooting
  • 25 “Keep It Real” Foods
  • Recipes

That’s it!  The whole thing you can glimpse through in 5 minutes and start to get it.

Now maybe you think that’s too simplistic, but I’ll remind you, if you bought this program… time is an issue.  Are you really going to spend hours researching diet and nutrition tips?  Why would you when you have a team of very smart “nutrition experts” that have done this for a long time and work with everyone from athletes to stay-at-home-moms; and know what they’re presenting to you and how to make it work?

T25 Nutrition Calorie Intake

This is where the T25 Nutrition plan or any plan can screw people up, but have no fear, it’s simple and easy.

On page 6 of the guide, there is a very simple 4 step calorie quiz that you take.  Be prepared, it’ll take some time… about 15 seconds!  Based on your score, either 3 or 4+ you will go with either the 1,200 calorie day plan or the 1,600 calorie day plan.  Also keep in mind that those are negotiable.

We see people get into programs and feel like they have to nail it at exactly 1200 calories.  Again I’ll say, don’t be so hard on yourself to the point of making it too difficult; you won’t stick with it if you do.  What you might find is that during your workouts, you feel really tired or lacking the energy needed to make it through the workout, or you might find yourself really dragging at the end of the day…if that’s the case, you need to play with those numbers a little.  Try adding 100 calories or so a day and see what happens until you find your sweet spot.  Same could apply in the opposite direction, you may find yourself needing to back off 100 calories.  Don’t be too attached to the numbers.  If you’re eating the right kind of foods, your body will tell you when it’s working.

The Calorie plans are broken down into 5 meals/snacks a day, with a caloric value on each one, so you’ll know when and what to eat and how much, depending on whether you’re in the 1,200 or the 1,600 calorie plan.

These are suggestions and guidelines, but you don’t want to starve yourself all day and then eat a 1,200 calorie dinner.  Good luck with that.

The T25 Nutrition Guide Offers Customization

I have to say this was really cool.  Say you have a lot of body fat to lose, then you’ll focus more on the recipes that are marked with a “P”.  Those are the are the meals with a higher protein percentage.  Maybe you’re just trying to shed a few pounds, you’ll focus more on the meals that are marked with a “C”.  These meals have a higher carbohydrate percentage so that you can have more energy during your workouts and less risk of plateauing.

Troubleshooting

This is where I struggle and I have a feeling you may too:

  • if you struggle with temptations or cravings, answer for that
  • want a boost before your workout, answer for that
  • hungry at bedtime, answer for that
  • starving all the time, answer for that (I kinda gave you that one earlier)

Focus T25 “Keep It Real” Foods

I LOVED THIS PART!  Why?  I’m a visual person, not a bookworm.  In addition to the T25 Recipes, this is a list of 25 foods that you can carry around with you on your phone as a picture or a list, that you can always use to fall back on.  It’s your “safety net” so to speak.  When in doubt, grab this list!  Again, keep it simple!

T25 Recipes

I’ll be the first to say, I’m not a cook.  My wife will attest to that.  But with the T25 Recipes, it consist of 25 recipes with 5 ingredients and only 5 minutes to prep…HELLO?!?  Even I can do these.  Finally, I can bring something to the table, literally.

Remember when making the recipes, go organic when possible.  I’ve known Shaun for years and I know how picky he is about this part, so do what you can.

One little tip I got from Shaun, sweet potatoes are your friend, amazing food and great source of carbs.  They are loaded with what your body needs from a nutritional standpoint.  I knew this about Shaun before I saw him on Dr. Oz praising this amazing food.  So if you like them, love them more!  If you want to see more on this, check out our You Tube video where he talks about it.

 

In Summary

Focus T25 is the first workout of it’s kind to allow you to burn as many calories in 25 minutes, as you do in 1 hour!  Yes you read that right, it won’t happen on Day 1 or maybe not even in week 1; but by the time you get into the 2nd week of this program, you’ll be a master of your fitness.  In 25 minutes a day, you can GET IT DONE!  No more excuses.

How Did the Focus T25 Workout Get Created?

Carl Daikeler was looking for a program for himself that was going to be an easier fit into his busy schedule as the CEO of Beachbody, something he could get in-n-out with. So he called up Shaun T the trainer and creator of the Insanity workouts. He asked Shaun if he could create a program for people with busy lives that could give them the same amount of intensity that you get in the Insanity workouts, but in half the time.

After that conversation, Focus T25 was born.

Is T25 For Beginners?

YES!!!  Focus T25 is for anyone.  That’s the beauty of this program.  If you’re that person who’s never done a Shaun T workout before, or never worked out before… we got you covered! If you’re an “Insaniac” and you’ve completed Insanity and/or Asylum, we got you covered too!

For the beginer: Focus T25 is the first program Shaun’s put out that has a modifier. Tonya also from the Insanity workouts, was coming off of having a baby, so Shaun grabbed her and asked if she’d be willing to be the modifier for T25, she said “yes!”  Her transformation with the program was truly amazing.  The baby weight is GONE!

If you’re an Insaniac and loved Insanity and Asylum, you will be challenged.  Once you master the moves (which for you will not take long) you’ll be cranking out a crazy calorie burn in half the time.  A lot of people ask if they can use it has a second workout and still do other stuff.  The answer is yes, but you need to know your body and be careful.  I personally don’t think you’ll need it.  So that’s on you!

Breakdown of T25

T25 is starting off with 3 phases; Alpha, Beta and Gamma.  Instead of me explaining, I thought I’d let Shaun do it for me.  Here’s Shaun T from our trip to Vegas at the Beachbody Summit telling you all you need to know about each phase.

The ALPHA Phase

The Alpha Phase of Focus T25 is all about focusing on building that strong foundation. Shaun T explained that Alpha was all about focusing on what you are doing, and getting the form down correctly so you can really take things up a notch in the Beta Phase of Focus T25. Alpha phase is a lot of fun to workout to and carries a nice rhythm you will learn.

It’s not about how fast you can do the moves or how many reps you can do. It’s all about proper formForm will get you the results with Focus T25.

 

The BETA Phase

Like the Alpha phase, T25 Beta phase is only 25 minutes per workout. However, unlike Alpha, the Beta phase is more intense cardio and starts to introduce you to using a few pieces of gear in the workout (some dumbbells and or resistance bands if you’d like).

 

The GAMMA Phase

The Gamma Kit is sold separately and includes four 25-minute workouts. Gamma focuses on strength which is a great phase right after the intense cardio you get from the Beta phase.
