Our Top 5 Favorite “Fitness” Things

On our YouTube Channel, we showcase a lot of things from shoes to pre-workout formulas and much more because people always ask us, “What is that?” or “What are you wearing?”. So now without further ado … you’ll be in the know!

By far our favorite shoe to workout in for several reasons. They are extremely comfortable, don’t have to be broken in and are really good for cross training and lateral movement.

#2 – Cellucor C4 Extreme Workout Supplement

Now I know there are a lot of pre-workout formulas, these are just “our” favorites. C4 right now, is Todd’s (mine) favorite pre-workout formula. It gives you the tingle, the flavors are amazing and it definitely pushes you through your workout.

Alisha on the other hand loves the E&E pre-workout that we sell ourselves. Both are amazing and will help you push through. The E&E is a good start for people who have never tried a pre-workout before and it’s safe for all levels of exercise and will give that extra push in a safe way.

C4 is little more extreme and I would only say to use it for the more extreme workouts or when playing sports. #2XU Compression Shorts & Tights (Men & Women)

Love, love, love these! If you workout a lot, you probably wear some type of compression shorts, or you should! I’ve bought so many pairs at the workout chain stores and after a while they begin to develop the “funk”, fade and just don’t seem to hold up well at all. Well that’s before I found these beauties. It’s another gem that Shaun turned me onto, first off they last forever, he has several pairs that he’s had for years! The screen-printing on them seems to hold up better which keeps them looking like they did the day you bought them, and they don’t develop the funk!

But you want to know what I love about them the most? The way the fit. A lot of compression shorts fit me weird, it’s hard to find the pair that doesn’t push your skin up and make you look like you have a “muffin-top” and then there’s some that are too big or after a while break down and become too loose. These have hardly any waistband on them at all so it dramatically cuts down the “muffin-top” push which let’s face it, makes you feel better about yourself when you look in the mirror. If you look in the mirror and you feel like you look fat before you workout, you’re mental state going in is going to suck. These fit you the way all shorts should.

These are the only compression shorts I feel comfortable enough in, to workout in just them…with no shorts over the top of them. They are pricey, but when you consider you don’t have to buy any more for a LONG time, they pay for themselves in that and in the way they make you feel.

#4 – Perfect Fitness Pushup Stands

We’ve used a couple of different push-up stands in the past, and we love the Beachbody ones that you can purchase on our SHOP tab, but we also found these little beauties on Amazon and love the versatility and lightweight features of them.

#5 – Vivobarefoot Men’s Stealth Running Shoe

This is a brand new one to our world, but quickly moving up the ranks. I’ve been skeptical of minimalist shoes and the “working out barefoot” approach, but I’m intrigued and am exploring it.

Darren, who you may know from Shaun’s workouts like Insanity, Asylum and more, turned me onto these. They essentially allow you to workout barefoot, but with something on your feet. They cut down on wearing shoes that may mess up your kinetic chain and the way your body absorbs shocks from jumping as well as the way you run. I’ve tried them outside and it was a little weird, but I love them inside in our workout room (granted it has padding and carpet), but when I wear them inside I notice my feet do respond well to them. If you are someone who has pain in your arches and feet hurt when you workout, you should definitely look into these.

Insanity Workout Success Story: Gary Donovan

How 60 Days COMPLETELY Changed Gary’s Life and Look!

My name is Gary. I’m 37 years old. I have a beautiful wife and 4 wonderful children. I am a restaurant manager so that means crazy hours and lots of snacking. I have worked in restaurants since I was 16 years old and enjoy it a lot.  I have been a little heavy most of my adulthood until about six years ago. My wife and I were going to take a trip to Hawaii. I had to lose weight fast so I did the South Beach diet and gained the weight back as soon as I stopped the diet. I then crossed paths with Todd Midgett who turned me onto P90X. WOW!! I was in the best shape of my life. Things were great being in shape weighing 168 pounds. I slowly stopped working out and became lazy. I even purchased Insanity and gave up 2 weeks in.  Over time I had managed to reach 220 pounds. I have never been so over weight. My life was good but there was something missing. I was too embarrassed to go to the pool. I was even hesitant to go to the beach. How did this happen and why don’t I get off my butt and do something about this ran through my head every day. I finally made the decision this January to give Insanity another go. Thank God I did!  A group of friends said they wanted to start an Insanity workout group. What better time than now. I committed to them and myself with the support of my loving wife. I go every night to my buddies house where 7 of us hold each other accountable. It’s been great doing the workouts. Throughout the pain and agony I found a way to “dig deeper”.  I now have so much energy. We have all come a long way. I am proud to say that I have lost 25 pounds so far. We will be starting Asylum in a week. Can’t wait.

P90 (Revamp of Power 90) is Launching September 23rd!

What’s a Good Program for Beginners? P90!

For those of you who didn’t already read previous post from us about P90 or know about it already, it’s a revamp or relaunch of Tony Horton’s first program “Power 90” that eventually launched the successful P90X franchise.  Much like with the Star Wars movies, where they went back and gave you the previous 3 movies after movies 4, 5 and 6 were out….here comes P90.  The workout before P90X, P90X2 and P90X3.

Now, some of you know, Power 90 is what we started with.  P90X was too intimidating and I felt Power 90 was a good start for me, well this is the same deal.  P90 is for those of you who need a entry level workout that could take you into a P90X or P90X3 (not P90X2, it’s a graduate program to P90X).


Breakdown of the Schedule

So they basically took the Power 90 outline and expanded it, but yet kept it the same.  Power 90 was set up for you to rotate between 2 dvds for 30 days (Sweat 1 and Sculpt 1 both 30 min) and then in month 2 you would graduate to the next dvd (Sweat 2 and Sculpt 2, both a little longer versions of the month 1).  They both also had an abs workout that you would do on the Sweat days.

So what they’ve done now is take that model and expand it and I’m glad they did, it needed it.  They basically have made it a 90 Day program (like P90X) but for beginners or for people who need a less intense workout.  

There’s 2 schedules to follow, one is cardio based and one is sculpt based.  Sweat schedule has you doing the cardio workouts 3 times a week, where the Sculpt schedule has you doing the resistance workouts 3 times a week.  Then you have a cool ending to your week with the Saturday Special workout.

So month 1 you do Sweat A and Sculpt A, month 2 you do Sweat B and Sculpt B, and month 3 you do Sweat C and Sculpt C.  This I’m glad to see, because after 30 days, you’re going to be ready to move on to something new.  I found that to be true for me when we did Power 90.  There are 4 additional workouts that you can buy (Speed Sculpt, Speed Sweat, Speed Abs and Horton’s Greatest Hits) on a bonus dvd.  I’m not sure what the exact price of the bonus dvd is, but feel free to check with me or click the shop tab on this site and you’ll be able to check out all the options.  Based off what we’ve seen in the past, it’ll probably be $59.95.  That’s been the pattern on the bonus dvd’s with the previous X workouts.

Nutrition

Like with all the programs, Beachbody did an amazing job with the nutrition guide in the sense that they kept it simple.  It’s about a 1,200 daily calorie intake, has some amazing ideas for snacks and it tells you when to eat and make it work for you.  It uses Michi’s Ladder (you’ll get that with the program) and an easy portion control system, which is genius and is about as simple as it gets when it comes to what to eat and what not to eat….so freakin’ basic and simple.  Don’t worry, we got your back on this if you need it.

So like with all launches, P90 will be available in the Challenge Pack form (which is always the better way to go) especially when it’s on sale and we can offer swag….which we always do!

P90 Info Coming

P90 About to Launch!

As I write this, I’m on a plane to Scottsdale AZ for the annual Beachbody Leadership Event, where this time, P90 will be one of the highlights of discussion.

This program is near and dear to my heart.  It’s what launched Alisha’s and my fitness journeys.  Albeit, it was me who needed it the most, P90 (formerly Power 90) was the program that I went with in order to “build up” to P90X.  It’s funny, P90 is what most people call P90X, “Oh, I got that P90!” or “PX90”.  Now the confusion will just be even that much worse, but never the less, the program is and will always be a great program.

Who’s It For?

Honestly, anyone.  I know we’ve been saying that a lot, with T25 and 21 Day Fix, but it is true.  I see this as yet another option for those people who have a lot of weight to lose and are intimidated by the thought of working out.  I know because that was me almost 7 years ago.

If you’re someone who just wants something that’s not as intense and more of a “casual” approach to working out, meaning, it’s a starting place or a re-starting place for you, then I would say it’s for you.  

I also see this as a great program for people like my dad, who at the age of 63, is realizing he needs to stay active, you know the saying “A body in motion, stays in motion”.  That’s him.  He needs this.  You may need this.

Again, we’ll find out more details this week and actually workout with Tony and see what the new workouts are like, so I may come back and add more categories to this list.

Options, Options, Who Wants Options?

Next Set of Accountability Brings Variety

So as we come out of the 2014 Beachbody Coach Summit, we always have cool new programs (like PiYo, 3 Day Refresh and soon P90) but this Summit was different and I’ll tell you why in a minute.

First Things First

piyo.001Alisha is SUPER excited about PiYo, coming off a really bad quad injury and having knee issues from the past, she’s looking forward to a low impact workout that really helps the body heal injuries and get lean and strong without any equipment.  I too will be mixing this in to my routine for flexibility improvement.

21 Day Fix Still Going Strong!

YES, we are still launching 21 Day Fix Groups all the time.  There’s always a 21 Day Fix group going on, with it only being 3 weeks long, it’s not hard for you to jump in and use it as an opportunity to start some good habits.  We also have 5 Day Clean Eating Groups, that are even a simpler step than that!  So that could be an option to look into.  Again, just reach out to my awesome wife, [email protected] and we’ll get you all the info.  The cool thing about the 21 Day Fix, is we use the container system for all the programs that we do, so we’ll be right there with you on the daily nutrition and the workouts are amazing, especially the ab one!

10494841_10152413602947891_4944241702169083858_nAmanda and I (she’s my workout partner on You Tube if you don’t know) pride ourselves on trying to get better all the time.  We sometimes push too hard and don’t take breaks when we should, but we’ve gotten better.  As our thirst for knowledge and change grows, we reach out to people who know more than us so we can learn and get better, after all, if we get better…then we can pass it on to you and help you get better.

I’ve known Keith Queen (from P90X3) for years and recently got to be friends with Sean Callahan (from X2, X3 and good buds with Tony H) over the last year or so.  The man is a pull-up beast and very wise when it comes to fitness, they both are.  As you can tell, he was killing me in the workout.  Amanda and I took the opportunity to learn from them and will so again in September when we meet again for another workout to measure gains (little contest we have going).

What Amanda and I learned was that we were on the right track, BUT I wasn’t bringing it to you in a way to where you could really go on the journey with us.  In other words, we were having a lot of fun behind the scenes and not including you!  Not sure why, you can hate us later.  Point is, we came up with some cool ideas and now know how and what to share, so you can do it with us.  To view the videos from our workout here’s Part 1 and Part 2.

What is a Beachbody Coach?

Becoming a Beachbody Coach Changed My Life

It’ll be 6 years this September that we decided to take a leap of faith and start our own business as Independent Beachbody Coaches, hence the birth of NC Fit Club.  Had I known at the time how much social media and YouTube would change and grow our business, I may have chosen a different name.  But so far, people seem to realize that just because we’re based out of North Carolina, that doesn’t mean we can’t coach them.  In fact, most of the people we work with aren’t even local to us…so I guess they don’t mind the name!

The Day I Took the Leap of Faith

I remember Monica (my free Coach at the time, more on that HERE) asking me for 6 months to become a coach.  Why?  Because she saw something in me that she knew “wasn’t normal”.  She saw me lose vast amounts of weight with Power 90 and P90x and encouraging others to do the same and she knew that I had what it took to help others.

So why did it take me 6 months to say yes?  I wish I knew.  I would probably say a lack of faith in myself, the fear of a networking business, the idea that I could actually own my own business didn’t seem realistic (see first reason).  There’s a 100 excuses I came up with and that I hear from others everyday  .  It makes me smile, because when I get the “I don’t have time” and “I’m not a good salesman/woman” lines from people, who I think would help change others lives, I think “You have no idea”.

It’s Not Sales

First off, the business has grown and changed so dramatically over the last 6 years for us, we finally have an understanding, through much personal development, that it’s not about sales…it’s about relationships.  I tell people all the time, if you think this is sales, then you’re right….it’s not for you.

It’s taking the time (and not that much) each day to just do the simple tasks that it takes to be successful.  It’ s like your workout, it’s like your parenting, it’s like anything in your life that you are good at or want to be good at it.  If you’ll be consistent and true to yourself, you be so much more to so many people.  You’ll experience a freedom of living the life that you knew you were meant to live.  A life without regret, a life of amazing opportunity and a life that will touch people in a way you never knew possible.

Who’s Destiny Do You Hold in Your Hands

Alisha & Todd - 21 Day FixThe answer is not just yours, it could be many others.  In the video I talk about how Monica changed my life. She had no idea at the time what she was about to do for me by partnering with us.  This business is about developing true relationships with people, who when they commit, you help to change their lives through instilling in them a belief that they can do it.  How?  By figuring out the real reason for why they want to become healthier, what the weight they want to lose truly represents.  Maybe it’s insecurity, maybe they don’t want to end up dead at the age of 45 like their parents.  Maybe it’s to get off blood pressure or cholesterol medication.  Whatever the reason, you’re their support, their cheerleader and most importantly their friend.

There are so many stories and so many people who’s lives we’ve been lucky enough to witness amazing change in, that would not have been possible without our Beachbody Coaching business.

What If?

What if I told you that when I was almost 100 lbs. overweight, that Monica was almost halfway across the country in Phoenix, Arizona while I sat in Charlotte, NC? You’d think, how could a lady in Phoenix help me in Charlotte? It’s simple, because she cared. She cared enough to plug me into a support system that works. She surrounded me with people via Facebook and Message Boards (yes back before FB was popular) and she took the time to talk to me each week and keep me on track and accountable to my goals.

What if you could do that for someone else?  What if you could create something that gave your family a new lifestyle and a healthy one at that?

And most importantly, WHAT IF, you only did it to save money while you worked on yourself?  That’s fine too!!! We have amazing programs, you may not be ready to coach and just want to work on losing weight yourself!  That’s fine, but why not save money while you do it?

P90X3 Results

P90X3 Got Me Back to Where I Was 6 Years Ago!

I haven’t been this lean since I did Insanity the Asylum, 6 years ago.  Difference was, this time I had to work much harder…due to the fact that I was 39 this time and not 33.  Plus I had the help of the 21 Day Fix Nutrition Containers that I worked in the last 30 days.  That was a game changer!

One of the things P90X3 taught me, was that my body responds well to pull-ups, push-ups and weights, but in the style that Tony Horton has you do them.  My whole journey started with Power 90 and P90X.  That’s when I got the craziest and most dramatic results.   That’s not to say the other programs didn’t work, because Asylum got me the leanest until now.   P90X3 seemed to match those results and actually add more muscle, but to be fair, X3 is 90 days and Asylum is only 30…so it’s kind of a wash.

1615137_10202960222946004_688897302_nWeek five is kinda a love/hate relationship. I love doing the upper body workouts minus the push-ups, plus the max was awesome! I hate for some reason that I cant explain, the lower body workouts. I’ve hated them since p90x.

While the first phase seemed like a lot more cardio and just coming off Shaun t’s workouts it was exhausting, the second phase seems just the right mix of cardio and weights. I’ve only completed the first week and as far as the legs go I know I can push myself harder, but I don’t want bulky legs. In order to get the most out of the leg work, I’ve got to up the weights a lot since Tony has already determined how many reps we will do. The MMX workout has crazy calorie burn, but it’s also fun. It makes me realize that I should never get into a fight.
Still having fun and everyone keep pushing play!!

Week 6:

Going into week 6, I was disappointed in my week 5 performance and mindset.

It was frustrating doing legwork and balance, two of my problem areas.  Not only that, but I’m still struggling with push-ups, but I shook it off and hit “refresh.” Sadly I still dislike triometrics, but I will push past it and see how this week goes. I know I can go at my own pace, but I would like to keep up with Tony. I strangely like Eccentric Lower, but I need to use heavier weights to maximize the workout. This week I’m going to go with 15’s although 20’s would be better. I also love the Incinerator workout and the burnout is brutal and nauseating, in a good way! Eccentric Upper is going well except the freaking push-ups, I’ll keep pushing though. All in all, X3 is working very well and I feel stronger and the core is taking shape ( yippee)! Now if I can clean up my eating, trying trying trying!!!! Now off to week 7.

I made it through Block 1 of my P90x3 Lean journey! As Block 1 came to an end, I noticed my form improving, especially those involving balance. I credit Yoga for that.

After the first 4 weeks, there is a Transition week or recover week before starting Block 2. I enjoyed the break from the more intense moves, i.e. donkey kicks. Additionally, my muscles needed the breather to focus on stretching. Dynamix became my favorite workout during this time. You do have the option of completing Dynamix on your rest day during each block, but I had chosen not to, so Transition week was my introduction to it. It’s a great recovery and stretch routine that incorporates more dynamic stretches as opposed to the longer holds in Yoga…Love it. Pilates is introduced in Transition week as well. I’m a newbie to Pilates, so I was pretty shaky during the routines. My core was on fire! I’m looking forward to the transformation this workout will have on my mid-section, aka “My Trouble Zone”.

Now I’ve ventured into Block 2; Yay!! So far I enjoy it more than Block 1. The new routines include:

· Triometrix – A great plyometrics workout that includes 3 levels of intensity per move. The levels shown also work as modifications for those at different stages in fitness. You will feel the burn for sure during these 30 minutes. · MMX – This one is martial arts based. It’s a fun one. I can’t help but feel a little badass after doing it!

· Incinerator – An upper body killer! My lower body is much stronger than my upper, so this one is a difficult one for me.

My progress in numbers: I’ve maintained the 2 pounds lost during my first month. However, overall I’ve noticed more leanness and definition to my muscles. Very happy about that!
