How To Compare Shakeology

Or, “How Do I Really Know If This is Worth the Money When Everything Else Costs Less?”

There are many “protein shakes” and meal replacements that are less expensive than Shakeology. But  comparisons – based on the simple “protein shake” or even “health shake” are usually off the mark because of intangibles like quality of sourcing, efficacy, and the delicate balance of incredible health benefits and delicious flavor that is unique to Shakeology.

When we developed Shakeology, our goal was to fill a void in the marketplace where the benefits of the shake would live up to the promise of the line “The Healthiest Meal of the Day.”  Shakeology was designed for people who want more than protein, and for people who really expect  the health benefits being represented by the ingredients on the label. And does the competition formulate for the synergistic benefits between the ingredients, or just slap together whatever is hot in the media? Shakeology was specially formulated for the collection of ingredients to work together like a symphony; this combination is so effective some people report dramatic benefits within the first week. We’re not just talking about weight loss here, we’re talking meaningful health benefits; regularity, energy, vitality!

Other supplements point to one or two individual ingredients and build a “story” around their super food attributes…  that’s like saying you can put Michael Jordan on a team of amateurs and still have a championship caliber team. Vanilla?

If the shake you’re considering is vanilla, how do they achieve vanilla flavoring? Our research indicates that it is impossible for the superfoods, adaptogen herbs, anti-oxidants, phytonutrients and digestive enzymes to co-exist and taste good in a vanilla flavor, unless the vanilla flavor is achieved chemically and artificially. (It’s the “dirty little secret” of the flavoring industry even though labeling guidelines still allow this artificial flavoring  to be called “natural vanilla flavoring”) Other companies are willing to use that labeling loophole for their benefit. But not Shakeology.

So here’s the question; are you drinking the shake so you can enjoy vanilla, or so you can get the incredible health benefits from a shake that doesn’t taste like a “health drink”? We call Shakeology “the healthiest meal of the day” for a reason, and we plan on doing what it takes to live up to that.

Protein:

When it comes to comparing protein quality, you need to look closely to see the truth:

“Say NO to soy”

Does the competition use ANY soy in their formulation? Soy protein contains estrogen-mimicking compounds that can interfere with your hormones, and on top of that most of the soy in the marketplace is GMO (genetically modified), two important reasons why we don’t use soy in Shakeology.

It is our general opinion that many people are consuming too much soy in the pursuit of health – and thus perhaps producing too much estrogen which can cause many adverse issues in the body.  Do a little research of your own on the topic, and you will be as shocked as we are at what you will learn about soy.

Likewise, if a company is promoting that their protein is “more absorbable”, be careful. Protein sources like Whey Protein Hydrolysate have been shown to trigger a much higher insulin response in the body. That’s not an outcome we would tolerate in any health shake, much less Shakeology.

Our protein source is whey protein isolate, which is more than 90 percent pure protein. Plus, Shakeology is loaded with digestive enzymes-and lactase, that’s the enzyme that breaks down lactose and is found in over-the-counter products like Lactaid®.  Don’t confuse whey protein concentrate with “isolate”. Whey protein concentrate is the least pure form of whey protein made. The benefits of “isolate” vs. “concentrate” is that the fat has been removed to achieve “isolate”. The fat in whey protein is what carries toxins consumed by the animal. That’s the reason Shakeology can be used by so many people who are lactose-intolerant – because those toxins have been removed through the isolate process.

We also look at the source of every single protein batch that shows up at the manufacturer.  If we find the manufacturer is cutting a corner by bringing in protein from farms that use hormones or are ok feeding inorganic materials to their cattle, we tell them to find another source.  This is the kind of scrutiny that other companies just don’t give their product, and it’s the kind of attention to detail which doesn’t show on the label. (But it does show in how you feel when you consume the product over the long term!)

Glycemic index tested…

In terms of sugar, many protein shakes have 1g of sugar or less. This is because they are using artificial chemical sweeteners (check the label for sucralose, aspartame, or sugar alcohols). Shakeology’s small amounts of sugar comes from natural sources which are easily processed by the body and in fact has been tested and certified by an independent lab to have a Low Glycemic Index of 24 – that’s lower than most fruits (an apple is 36 and an orange is 43)!

What is not in the base, they may suggest you add later:

Other shakes don’t cost as much as Shakeology at first glance, but they also don’t contain the full profile of  vitamins and minerals or whole-food sources of anti-oxidants, phytonutrients, adaptogen herbs, prebiotics, probiotics or digestive enzymes. We’ve seen competitors make you buy a separate vitamin pack for $150 per month! And if you want chocolate flavoring you have to buy a separate flavor packet for an extra $25 a month. If you want metabolism boosting effects and appetite control, you have to buy 2 additional products at $50 each. Once you add it up, this is hardly a “good deal” and it is usually questionably healthy..

To achieve the benefits of Shakeology we’ve seen competitors charge between $250 and $335 per month! $120 doesn’t seem expensive when you realize all of the benefits Shakeology delivers.

In the words of Shaun T: “We got you…”

 So, it’s October, this is that time of the year where we’re coming off of summer vacation, school’s back in, holidays are right around the corner and we’re all busy!  You know what else, it’s also the time when most of us start to let our fitness go.  Then we end up packing on some extra weight, eating more during the holidays and next thing you know it’s January and we’re wondering why we look so fat in the holiday pics.

Hmmmm, could it be because we didn’t make ourselves a priority?  It’s easy to get busy, I get it.  I’m a dad and a husband, we both work full time jobs and run our own fitness company.  It’s tough, but the bottom line is you have to make yourself a priority.  You have to make the time to workout, make the time to educate yourself on proper nutrition.  Make the time to reach out to people like us for help!  Trust me, accountability is the best tool for success.  If you didn’t need it, you’d already done it by now…..wouldn’t ya?

So here’s one of the solutions we’ve come up with.  We’re doing some Fitness Challenges base around programs that we know and love like P90X, Insanity, Asylum and Turbofire.  We’re also working with people on using Shakeology during the challenges to maximize the results.  But the bottom line is that we’re using these challenges to surround like minded people with others who need the support and want to reach the same goals.  Alisha’s currently halfway through with a group doing Insanity and I recently started (last week) a FB group with about 10 people doing Insanity the Asylum.  I think Alisha (who had never done a full round of Insanity) is realizing how hard it is, but she’s pushing through along with her group and they’re bonding and pushing each other though it.  They know it sucks on some days and it’s hard, but they know they have other people depending on them to stick with it….with them.

So my point to all this is….don’t let this last quarter of the year be like the last year or last month.  Do something different about your fitness.  Get up, take the initiative and join an accountability group.  Take the plunge!  I know it’s scary….but your health is worth it.  And you might be surprised what it’s like when realize “Wow, I can do this!”.

P90X2: What is it? How’s it Different?

Will P90X2 be Harder than P90X?

This is a tough question to answer.  I think it’ll be good for you to have done P90X and be decent at it.  But if you’re in good shape, then yes I think you could do this without having done P90X.  But if you’re new to fitness, then I would want to have a serious discussion with you before you attempted this workout, to prevent you from injuring yourself.

Anyone who’s done the P90X One on One’s…you’re golden!  Let’s rock and roll.  If you’ve done P90X and you’re bored with it…let’s rock and roll.

Muscle Confusion – Periodization

Periodization (or muscle confusion as it was called in P90X) is nothing new.  All sorts of athletes have been using this training method for years.  Most them had professional coaches who closely monitored their progress.  In recent years training plans have become readily available.  The problem with those plans, and a weakness of P90X, is that they are cookie cutter plans.  You frankly might not be ready to move from Phase I of P90X to Phase II of P90X, but there it is on the schedule – Recovery Week – Phase II.  P90X2 will change that by using flexible training periods.  We suggest you work with a Team Beachbody Coach to figure out how and when to switch phases.  And of course we’ll coach you for FREE.

Here are the Phases you’ll see in P90X2

 

P90X2 ProgramPhase I – Foundation:  3 to 5 Weeks

In Phase I of P90X2, the base training phase, you can expect to:

  • Move Better
  • Feel Better
  • Reduce Likelihood of Injury

This Phase is really about building up fitness in your stabilizing muscles.  I can tell you from working out with the P90X One on One’s, this has been HUGE in those workouts getting reday for the release of P90X2.  Since strengthening my stability muscles, I was able to rehab quicker from a baskeball injury I had in February as well as prevent further injury to my shoulders and knees when I get more physical under the basket, as I’m known to do.  I had my arm get tangled up several times and get pulled in awkard ways that would have normally been a bad situation, but because I work my stabilizers in my shoulders, they’re better prepared than some one who hasn’t.  P90X 2?s Foundation Phase is designed to level those types of things out and get you ready for Phase II.

Phase II – Strength: 3 to 6 Weeks

This is going to be hard…very hard.  In Phase II of P90X 2 you can expect to:

  • Get stronger through wider range of motion
  • Get more supple (be better at everything you do like basketball or any sport…sign me up)
  • Look good (as a 37 year old dad, I’ll keep my looks as long as I can)

P90X2 will combine strength and stability.  You’ll be doing push ups with your hands and feet on balls.  You’ll do levers, a brutal pull up maneuver (which I’m just now getting to where I can do them).  The stability ball will become your best friend.  Here’s an example of one of the workouts from the P90X One on One’s that can help you understand what we’re talking about and how your stabilization and performance can get crazy good.

Phase III – Performance: 3 to 4 Weeks

This is where things get fun.  This is the stuff that dreams are made of when it comes to an active lifestyle.  Since I’ve started with programs like the P90X One on One’s and Insanity the Asylum, my performance in all areas of my active lifestyle have improved.  In Phase III of P90X2 you can expect to:

  • Jump higher, run faster, improve athletically in anything you to and be more explosive
  • Start to fee like a kid again (this is my biggest one! I love looking and feeling younger)

It’s amazing what fitness will do for your attitude.  Get to Phase III of a program like P90X 2 and you’ll know what I’m talking about.  You really will fell like a kid again.

This is the Phase when the P90X2 workout employs P.A.P. or Post Activation Potential.  P.A.P. is fascinating.  P.A.P. only works in conditioned athletes only, so you don’t want to even attempt this type of workout until you’ve done the work in the other Phases or you could get hurt.  P.A.P. increases the production of muscle cell motor units adding explosive power.  P90X2 will have you doing a weighted resistance exercise prior to an explosive exercise.  That type of training results in amazing muscle growth. Beachbody knew this type of training would require some expert input, so they brought in Dr. Marcus Elliott of P3 (Peak Performance Project).  Dr. Elliott works with professional athletes and has them doing a lot of P.A.P. workouts.  He was the first to point out that this type of training is great, but the body needs to be conditioned in order to be able to perform at this level.

I’m so stoked about this stuff, after having a taste of the One on One workouts, I can’t wait.

Lesson: How to Constantly Improve Your Fitness
